Tracci will better protect Albemarle Seniors against Abuse and Exploitation
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, elder abuse refers to "any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult." The prevalence of elder abuse has been referred to as a "silent epidemic," and is becoming more pronounced as our population ages.
When running for Commonwealth's Attorney in 2007, Lunsford pledged to better protect seniors against abuse and exploitation. She has failed to do so.
In fact, Lunsford has rebuffed efforts by victim and elder rights advocates to ensure that the Albemarle Commonwealth's Attorney's office more effectively prosecute those who prey upon our seniors.
As your Commonwealth's Attorney, I will establish a Senior Security Task Force modeled after the Greater Augusta County Cooalition Against Adult Abuse to better protect our seniors against abuse and exploitation.
The Task Force will comprise representatives of law enforcement, community groups, social welfare agencies, assisted care and nursing facilities, and victim's rights advocates.
As your Commonwealth's Attorney, I will attach greater priority to ensuring Albemarle County is not only among the best places in the country to retire, but the safest. Our seniors must know they have a friend in the Commonwealth's Attorney's office.
