Tracci Notes Rise in Felony Booking Volume in Albemarle County, Pledges to Seek Justice for Victims
October 8, 2019
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA -- In recent years, Albemarle County has seen a rise in felony bookings, including a doubling in sex offense bookings, and a substantial rise in the volume of violent crime, felony traffic, and weapons offense bookings.
It is crucial to recognize that booking data is collected at the front end of the criminal justice process, immediately following arrest and appearance before the magistrate.
"This office has a statutory obligation to bring felony cases and will continue to work with law enforcement partners to seek justice for victims of violent crime, sex offenses, felony traffic offenses, weapons offenses and other serious criminal violations in Albemarle County."
- Robert Tracci
In the overwhelming majority of cases, this occurs before the Commonwealth's Attorney's office has an opportunity to weigh in on charging decisions. As a result, the booking volume/booking event ratio is largely unaffected by the influence of discretionary prosecutorial decision-making by the Commonwealth's Attorney.
